ETON’S MIDDLE SCHOOL CURRICULUM

At our private, international middle school in Mexico City, we have a bilingual curriculum following the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP) and the Mexican national curriculum from Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP). Our Middle School students explore eight subject groups that rely on global contexts, learning concepts, and strategies. They study language and literature in both Spanish and English, mathematics, science, individuals and societies, the arts, design, physical and health education, as well as independent subjects such as “Service as Action” and social and emotional learning.

Our Approach to Teaching and Learning

Learning at the Eton Middle School is about exploring ideas and different points of view. Students develop their natural intellectual curiosity through a deep understanding of concepts, their motivation for learning, and the development of their abilities and attitudes towards thinking and learning.

Our students become motivated to understand their natural, social, and cultural world through interdisciplinary learning experiences—all guided towards inquiry, action, and reflection.

They affirm their identity and build their self-esteem through positive interactions within our culture of thinking that values and extends their knowledge.

Intercultural Awareness through Language Acquisition

It’s through language that we access our own culture and those of others. At Eton School Mexico, the languages of instruction are Spanish and English.

We place particular emphasis on language acquisition to foster intercultural awareness. Therefore, our students study 50% of their curriculum in English, taught by professional, fluent English speakers.

Spanish as an Acquired Language

As an international school, we offer students whose native language is not Spanish a special program to support them in the acquisition of Spanish as a second or third language. Our program makes them aware of their own culture and language and allows them access to Mexican culture.

International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP Curriculum)

Eton School Mexico sets high expectations as we go beyond borders to deliver a rigorous international education, which fosters independence through critical and creative thinking.

As an International Baccalaureate World School since 1995, we are a leader in global education in Mexico City. At Eton, we offer the Middle Years Program (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate from Grades 7 to 10. Our students are also committed to the Mexican curricular programs and standards from the Mexican Ministry of Education (Secretaría de Educación Pública [SEP]).

Formative and summative assessments keep both students and parents informed about the ongoing development of students’ knowledge, understanding, skills, and attitudes.

Through Approaches to Learning (ATL), our adolescents also develop skills that allow them to become effective and reflective learners. ATL embeds organization, collaboration, communication, information literacy, digital literacy, reflection, thinking, and transferable skills, as well as the development of attitudes and dispositions important to lifelong learning.

A Visible Thinking and Learning Environment

Visible Thinking is a learning strategy of Harvard University's Project Zero program, developed to help students map out their thinking strategically, deepening their perspective and knowledge of a given topic. Through our learning environment that supports such strategies and techniques of visible thinking, our students have opportunities to develop their capacity for lifelong learning using expert thinking, problem solving, effective communication, and collaborative work.

Service as Action

Through “Service as Action” projects, our middle schoolers develop a strong sense of fairness and justice, respecting the dignity and rights of other people, and taking responsibility for their own actions and consequences.
